The IELTS exam requires excellent time management skills. During the IELTS test, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections must all be completed in one sitting, giving two and a half hours for the test overall. You should attempt all questions on the IELTS since there is no negative marking. The completion of the paper should not result in you not being able to score high.
You can use these tips to prepare for the exam, and you should be able to pass it without having any problems.
IELTS test-taking tips:
Don’t take the IELTS test without preparing and understanding the format and time allowed for each section, as well as the total time allowed for the test. It’s absolutely stress-free to take the test once you’ve practiced a few times and are familiar with the test. It will also take a lot of time if you are unfamiliar with the IELTS and don’t understand the instructions.
You should also understand your English proficiency level so that you can plan your preparation accordingly. If you aren’t very proficient in the language, you should prepare for the test for at least 2-3 months. With proper preparation, you will be able to answer all questions in all IELTS sections without any problems.
Taking the test after practicing and studying for it can exhaust test takers on the day of the test, which is one of the biggest mistakes they make. Their inability to write the test indicates a lack of mental preparedness. Therefore, one must be calm and free from stress. For a stress-free and relaxed wake-up the next morning, go to bed early the night before the test.
On an empty stomach, you can also make a mistake by trying to take the test. The more hungry you are during the test, the more likely you are to think about food rather than the questions or the answers you should give. You should eat well before the exam so that you are not hungry during it.
If you find yourself getting anxious during a test, close your eyes for a few minutes in between sections. Relax and breathe. Take advantage of your time to stretch. The stronger and healthier your body is, the better you will perform and also save time.
Standardized tests such as IELTS are available. The questions always follow the same structure and type. There is also the same amount of time allotted for all the questions. Practicing and learning to sit through the three HR times without becoming exhausted will help you to pass the test.
It is important to practice and become familiar with all kinds of skills before taking the test, such as note-taking, paraphrasing, and writing. Having difficulty reading your answer script will result in you losing marks, which in turn will lower your score. The first time you try writing legibly during the exam is going to take some time, so practice writing legibly ahead of time.
Understand the test format. Before the test, read and understand the instructions for every question in every module. This saves time during the test.
All of the above can be achieved by taking part in an IELTS tutorial or coaching school that is thoroughly familiar with all sections of IELTS, including IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking.
Online or from books, take many full-length practice tests. Work on one particular task until you are able to do it correctly if you find that you are taking a long time on it.
IELTS Listening Time Management Tips
In IELTS Listening, 40 questions are asked from 4 sections and you have 30 minutes to answer them. This recording includes four sections/speakers: two in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and one in the last. During the recording, pay attention to how the speakers switch between them. Since it is a lecture, the last section is relatively difficult.
It takes a little while for you to prepare for the next section after each section. Make the most of this time. You will spend more time reading everything if you try to read everything. Look for the words in the recording by reading around the blanks.
Answer the multiple-choice questions by identifying the question and its keywords. Keep an eye out for milestones, numbers, and names. Milestones help determine whether the speaker has already delivered a part of a conversation and answered the associated questions. Throughout the recording, they serve as guides.
Take a look at the diagrams, maps, and graphs. Pay attention to the headings and keywords. Make sure you remember the X and Y axis details.
Your answers will be transferred into the answer script after all the recordings are finished.
IELTS Reading Time Management Tips
In 60 minutes, you will need to answer 40 questions from 3 sections. Each section is more difficult than the previous one. The time allotted must be divided accordingly. A 15-minute time limit should be assigned to the first passage, a 20-minute time limit to the second passage, and a 25-minute time limit to the third passage.
Give yourself 3-5 minutes for each passage to check for errors and to make sure the answers are transcribed correctly.
Invest 5 to 7 minutes in understanding what the passage is about. Put some words next to the corresponding paragraph in each paragraph to summarize the thesis statement.
The keywords should be underlined. By doing so, you will be able to search for information in the paragraphs as you answer the questions.
Keep your focus on one question at a time. Move on to the next question if you cannot find the answers.
IELTS Writing Time Management Tips
There are two tasks to complete in the Writing section. An essay or letter is the first task, while a graph description is the second task. On Task 1, you must spend 20 minutes, and on Task 2, you must spend 40 minutes.
Prepare your answer for 3 minutes, then write it for 10 minutes, then check it for 2 minutes. It is only a descriptive task, so write down everything you see.
The plan for Task 2 should take 5 to 7 minutes, the writing should take 30 minutes, and the check should take 3 to 5 minutes.
If you are writing in favor or against the topic, note down the main points in the time allotted for planning.
Before taking the test, you should prepare for certain topics like technology, education, travel, and the environment. Topics can be found on many websites online, including the IELTS website. You can plan your essay more effectively if you research and become familiar with a variety of topics.
